Risk based guidelines may improve hypertension treatment

Baker et al (p 680) modelled three treatment thresholds for hypertension based on the absolute risk of cardiovascular disease. They applied their models to a sample of 2158 residents in Auckland, New Zealand. Applying a 5 year risk threshold of 15% was estimated to increase the number treated by less than 10% and increase the number of disease events averted by 35%.
