NHS Direct is a national telephone health advice line staffed
by nurses. On p 1035 O'Cathain et al report their evaluation of
patient satisfaction with the service during its initial phase in three
areas of England. In each area 350 consecutive callers were sent
questionnaires a week after their phone call. The median age of callers
was 35 and 80% were women. Of the 684 callers who had sought advice,
643 found it helpful. The most common reason given for finding the
advice helpful was because it offered reassurance.
