Women with low grade cytological abnormalities who have
a normal cervix on colposcopy and a normal or borderline smear test result at their first visit to a clinic can be safely discharged back
to community care. In the past such women have fallen outside the
guidelines of the NHS cervical screening programme. On p 1693 Teale et
al assess the outcome for a group of 577 women whose colposcopic
findings at a first visit did not warrant treatment, and they provide
clinical guidelines that would reduce unnecessary visits to a clinic.
This would help reduce anxiety in the women and would lower the cost of
the NHS cervical screening programme.
