Many specialist registrars would like to work part time when they are consultants

More than 40% of all specialist registrars in medical specialties (about 75% of women and 25% of men) in the UK would like to work part time as consultants, according to a study conducted by the Royal College of Physicians. On p 1578 Mather reports on a questionnaire survey sent to 2495 trainees in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland holding national training numbers in medical specialties. 1331 answered the question, "Would you like a part time (eight sessions or less) post when you become a consultant?" The proportions who answered positively in the different specialties varied markedly, depending mainly on the gender ratio of trainees, from about 25% of those in cardiology to 75% of those in palliative medicine.
