Delay in referral does not affect survival in ovarian cancer

Delay in referral from primary care in women with ovarian cancer does not adversely affect 18 month survival. Stage of disease at surgery is the most important adverse factor, and an effective screening programme is most likely to improve survival. In a retrospective study of 135 women, Kirwand and colleagues (p 148) found that 78% of women presented to their general practitioner within four weeks of the onset of symptoms and 73% were referred to hospital within four weeks of presentation. Seventy per cent were seen in hospital within two weeks of referral.
