Should doctors drink while on call?

Doctors disagree about whether it is right to use alcohol while on call and whether they should inform their patients if they have been drinking. A questionnaire survey by Ahmad and colleagues (p 579) found that although most doctors were against drinking while on call, 64% had encountered doctors whom they suspected had used alcohol while on call. Multivariable analysis showed that sex and speciality were not associated with doctors' responses, but older doctors were more likely to have encountered doctors who may have been drinking while on call.
