Interactive case report elicits varied perspectives

This week the BMJ presents the final part of a three part interactive case report describing a 66 year old woman with a rash who was diagnosed with dermatomyositis and splenic artery aneurysm (p 804). The patient, identified as Ruth, shares her view on her condition and mentions cancer risk, which many doctors avoid discussing with their patients. Hands, a vascular surgeon, describes various treatment options for splenic aneurysm, and dermatologists Kapur and Rustin give advice on handling neoplasm risk in Ruth's case. In two other commentaries, Benson outlines the recommendations for general practice, while Peile emphasises the importance of a web forum where different specialists can share their views on the case.
