Examples of expert groups that advise the chief medical and chief veterinary officers in the United Kingdom
The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens. Both the chief veterinary officer (CVO) and the chief medical officer (CMO) take independent expert advice from this group, whose secretariat is shared between the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department of Health, and the Health and Safety Executive. This expert forum supplements its core expertise with other specialists as necessary, and brings occupational health issues within its remit.
The Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food and the Special Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance provide advice to both CVO and CMO on antimicrobial resistance from human, veterinary, and agricultural use.
The UK Zoonoses Group is a cross-departmental group chaired by the CMOs of the UK in rotation which includes in its membership representatives from all the relevant government agencies. This group advises both the CVO and CMO and includes within its remit the coordination of public health actions across the UK, nationally, and locally with regard to zoonotic infections and provides advice on control measures to the ministers of both agriculture and health.
The National Expert Panel on New and Emerging Diseases advises the CMO directly, and particularly addresses "horizon scanning" for new and emerging infections. This group brings together the chairs of all the various independent advisory committees as well as specialists in the field.
The Human and Animal Infections and Risks Surveillance Group provides a forum for detailed analysis of data on animal and human health surveillance and provides an early opportunity to identify infections with potential for transfer between species.
